Creating An Elegant Living Room

There is no room in your house that says more about you and your family than your living room. Other than the bedroom, it's the place where you're likely to spend the most time. Whether chatting with friends, watching movies with the kids or relaxing with your special someone over a bottle of wine, your living room should be a place that invites you to relax and settle in for a while.

The most central piece of furniture in your living room, and the one that draws the most focus, is your sofa. Your sofa should be comfortable above all else. It should be something that you can spend hours on a lazy weekend afternoon, something that active kids can climb on and something that will encourage friends to stay just a little bit longer. Your sofa should be pleasing to the eye. Rather than the overstuffed, over-pillowed giants that were popular a generation ago, the modern sofa is sophisticated, with a refreshing elegance that seamlessly combines form and function. Whether you choose leather or fine upholstery, there are more elegant sofa configurations than ever before.

An elegant rug will help you delineate the space in your living room. Modern homes tend to be quite spacious, which can make a living room appear to be floating haphazardly on your floor. A rug will anchor your living room in whatever space you choose.

Choosing between a coffee table and a large ottoman should be your next step. There are benefits to both choices. A coffee table gives you a sturdy surface upon which to set anything you like. It also has much cleaner lines that help to tie a room together. Using a large ottoman rather than a coffee table does have a functional drawback in that you can't simply set whatever you like on it. Using a tray for serving drinks or food can provide an elegant accessory piece to your living room. The ottoman, with its curved lines and shapely contours can also give an overly linear room a bit of softness.

The television cabinet in your living room should be sleek and understated. Modern electronics don't require enormous cabinets like they did in the past. If you have a wall-mounted plasma or LCD TV, a small TV cabinet placed beneath it will provide ample storage space for your home electronics.

Accessories should be well-placed. A neutral palette will encourage a sense of relaxation, but choosing one or two focus colors for your accessories can make a bold statement. Using accessories to display your focus colors will extend the style life of your living room by allowing you to easily change when a color falls out of fashion. Changing your accessories is also an easy way to make elegant seasonal changes.

Whether you're buying an entirely new set of living room, or updating your current one with some sophisticated modern furniture, creating a living room that reflects your taste and provides comfort to your family can make your home the inviting retreat you always dreamed of.

Contemporary Console Tables – Perfect For Helping Create A Contemporary Living Room

A real living room is as much about having things put in the proper place as it is making sure the right furniture pieces, like contemporary console tables, fill the space.

Think to all the living rooms you have been in over your life. There were likely some where people had great looking furniture, but there was too much of it. It bogged down the space in the room and you may have been so focused on how crowded the space was that the furniture itself lost its impact. In other living rooms you may have seen a massive space that was not well utilized. While they were going for a contemporary look, there was too much space left open between the items in the room and you almost felt you had to yell to stay in the conversation, not to mention you couldn't reach the table, so you were forced to hold your drink all night. If there were contemporary console tables in place, this wouldn’t be a problem.

The first thing to remember when creating a living room space, especially a contemporary one, is that this area is meant to be a space where people are comfortable and the furniture is functional. The entire mantra of contemporary furniture is function over form. It's supposed to do its job first and foremost. The look is not as important.

Also, while space is supposed to be appreciated and celebrated in contemporary décor, that does not mean there needs to be so much space that those who are sitting in the room do not feel comfortable in conversation.

There is a middle ground where you can have it all.

First you need to know about furniture groupings. Groupings are the putting together of furniture pieces that need to be together, and leaving space where it is appropriate.

Let's take a living room for example. You have a sofa, chair, coffee table and contemporary console table. You may be wondering why you would have a contemporary console table instead of an end table. Simple, more functionality. Many contemporary console tables can fit the same space, but allow more storage in a drawer, cabinet or shelves, to keep the clutter in the room to a minimum.

When fitting all these furniture pieces into a room, you may be drawn to spread them out, so there is more space between each piece, to give what you feel is a strong contemporary look. But you don’t have to do that. Instead, group all the furniture pieces together, so they can be used in harmony, and leave more space around the grouping. This will give off the same contemporary décor effect you were hoping for, but also let your furniture be used for what it was intended. Instead of looking at that contemporary console table, you can actually put a drink on it. Instead of seeing a book across the room on the coffee table, you can open it.

Grouping in contemporary décor is important. After all, you want the look, but also need to remember the importance that contemporary furniture is not doing its job if it's not usable. And with contemporary console tables, you have both.

Sofa, So Good
By Sarika Kabra

One of the most important things to do while furnishing your living room is to get good sofa sets. However, if you think buying a sofa is as easy as going to a furniture shop and picking up the first one visible, you are wrong. Buying a sofa can get as tiresome as buying any other good furniture. You have to take care of many issues while choosing the best one for your living room.

You have to first decide the size of the sofa you need for your house. Think of the size of the room in which you are planning to keep the sofa set. Also, if you are planning to keep the sofa in a room upstairs, you will have to think of the size of the stairs too.

Another thing to remember while looking for sofas is the decor of your house. If you have traditional living room furniture, you will have to look for a sofa that fits into the overall ambience. Also, the color of the sofa set should match the wall color. Many people go for the latest colors in sofa sets and regret their decision later. A lime green sofa may be all the rage today, but may become an object of ridicule in a few years. So, unless you want to change your sofa set with every season of fashion, you should select a color that suits your room's look. Usually, neutral colored sofas work best. You can always dress them with cushions in the latest prints to give the latest hot look in house decor.

Choose the fabric of the sofa with a lot of deliberation as well. In most cases people keep their sofas in the living room and use it very often. For any family gathering or even simple reclining, the sofa is singled out for extensive use. Moreover, if you have kids in your house, the sofa will be used perpetually. Thus, choosing white satin sofas in such cases will not be wise. The upkeep of such sofas is very high and they tend to wear out very quickly. If you want sectional sofas that are to be used in formal occasions only, you can splurge and get the best quality fabric for the sofa. In case, the use of sofa is informal, get practical.

You will also have to consider the comfort level you expect from your sofa. Sofas may be very firm or very fluffy. The back side could be tight or fitted with removable pillows. Usually, people prefer the pillowed sofas as they are very relaxing and comfortable. Other things to consider are the angle at which the back of the sofa is kept and the depth of the seat of the sofa. Some people like sofas that have seats pushing down on every sitting while others want a firm sofa seat. Only you will be able to decide the type that keeps you most comfortable.

If you still feel confused in the furniture store, never hesitate to ask for help from the salespeople.
